my new to me Finn

bought a t110GN Fin with the ole Wisconsin w4-1770 engine.  engine is locked up from sitting, and I doubt I rebuild it. Just curious on what other have used to re-power an old Finn.  The engine was a 35hp. But I see that some of the newer finns have small diesels ranging into the 80 hp range. do those newer machines have different pumps. 

I guess my main question is how big of an engine should I go with? 35hp plenty of power or do I need to find something larger?  Thanks

Most folks will try to put in the same engine, if it still exists, or something real similar, otherwise you may have some challenges with retrofits/adjustments/fabrication or the like. You should probably go to your nearest Finn dealer for assistance, as you are on the right track with a different style pump necessitated by your choice of engine replacement, which would be okay in the 35 Hp range.

The old Wisconsin W4 1770 was the go to engine back in the 70's and 80's.  You can find parts and a possible replacement for that engine at www.continentalengines.com     They bought Wisconsin Engine years ago and is a good source for parts and I do believe they sell replacement engines.

Some older Bowie customers have switched out the Wisconsin for more conventional 40hp Kohlers but it does involve some clutch modifications and a gear box reduction. Not sure about a Finn

Just finished my Wisconsin 1770 Rebuild a few weeks ago. Pitt Auto has almost all the parts you'll need. As with anything that is no longer manufactured parts can be expensive.  My rebuild including crank came to $3700, no labor. I think next time I'd go with a newer diesel and do the clutch work. Mine is on an 80's Bowie and for now she runs like a champ!

Thanks for all the reply's !  I was thinking about using the 40 hp kohler engine. But we had a good used mazda 4 cylinder forklift engine laying around so I think im going to re-power it with  that.
Im not a huge fan of those Wisconsin engines we have a couple in some other equipment. SO im defiantly not rebuilding it. so if anyone wants a frozen engine its yours for the price of scrap.

Yes i did get my hydro rebuilt. I got a lot of man hours in it but for a punk guy with 2 jobs I got it looking pretty nice. I ended up putting a good used Wisconsin back into it for simplicity right now. Ill post up some pictures. But I rebuilt everything from parts from local stores, didnt mess with calling Finn.
