New to hydroseeding turfmaker
« on: Fri January 11, 2019, 11:43:16 PM »
hey guys! I am new to hydroseeding and looking to see if I can get some information on how much mulch/seed/fertilizer and tack I will need for my machine that is a turfmaker with 500 gallons. I have been told to use 70/30 mulch but I don't know how much I need for material for a full tank. I live in maine. thank you!!

My suggestion to someone starting in the first time is to start light and on each load go a little heavier until you find the best mix for your machine.

70/30 should be a good product for your machine.  As far as how much mulch you should use I would start with perhaps 150 pounds then all a little more on each load.   Another factor too can be if you bought your unit new or uses since sometimes pump wear can affect how much material you can use.  Working in Maine paper mulch will also work fine and it is easier to use and cheaper.

As far as seed and without knowing what seed mix you are going to use I would ballpark one 50 pound bag for your unit.  You should be able to seed about 6000 sq. ft. with your unit so that is about 8 pounds per 1000. For fertilizer I would look at the bag and see what they say for coverage.  For instance if the bag says it covers 12,000 sq. ft. use half a bag.  As for tack it depends on what kind of tack you are using.  If you are using a PAM tack about 3/4 of a cup should work ok.

As far as seed goes for a residential lawn I would say a blend of 50% good quality perennial rye, about 25% bluegrass and about 25% creeping red fescue or something in that general range.

As far as fertilizer goes a lot of guys like to use something like a 20-20-20 or a 19-19-19.   My own personal preference is to go with a high phosphorus fertilizer.  I use a 16-45-8.  Mixes with a high amount of phosphorus are considered to be starter fertilizers and are what the fertilizer manufactures recommend for using when seeding a lawn.  I like to try to give my lawns a healthy root system which is what the phosphorus does.
